LUMSDEN NOTES

FOOTBALL. (From Our Correspondent.) The football competition in the Northern District was advanced a further stage on Saturday, when the matches were played in fine weather. Lumsden travelled to Riversdale and defeated the home side by 38 points to nil. The shield-holders proved to be too strong for their opponents, the Riversdale team being comprized of young and light players. At half-time the score was 18 to nil, six tries, none of which were converted. Tries in this spell were scored by Cleland, L. Ogilvy, Cunningham, Patterson, Tomlin and Wellman. In the second spell four converted tries brought the score to 38. Patterson, Croabie, Earl and Crawford were successful in scoring tries, which were converted by Richards, Crawford, J. Ogilvy and Tomlin. The home side possesses some promising players and, with a bit more weight in the forwards, the team should give a good account of itself. Shallard, Lenon and Ferris were prominent in some useful work for Riversdale, while Crosbie, in the Lumsden backs, was responsible for a number of successful passing rushes in which Wellman, Cleland, Cunningham and Patterson also combined well. The forwards as a whole played well, good line-out work by Senior and Small being noticeable. Mr L. Guyton was referee. The Waikaia team played Country Pirates at Athol and were leading by three points to nil when the game was concluded. About ten minutes after the second spell commenced a Pirate player, J. D. Williamson, had the misfortune to receive a broken leg. A considerable amount of time was taken up attending to the injured player and, owing to failing light, it was decided to discontinue the match. Waikaia scored the three points as a result of a penalty goal. Mr A. Partridge was referee. On receiving medical attention it was discovered that Williamson had sustained a broken bone in the leg below the knee. The player mentioned is well-known in athletic circles, being a successful long-distance runner at the various sports meetings. The Mossburn team travelled to Balfour and suffered defeat at the hands of the home side by 17 points to 5. Mr Sheed was referee. The following are the fixtures for Saturday, with the referees appointed by the subunion : Lumsden v. Balfour, at Lumsden; Mr A. G. Small. Moasburn v. Pirates, at Mossburn; Mr A. J. Earl. Waikaia v. Riversdale, at Waikaia; Mr D. Thomas.
