IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY. A Record Radish. In these days when new records are being frequently claimed, it is interesting to be able to add another to the list. Yesterday a local amateur gardener brought into the Times Office a radish which measured a foot in length, constituting in his opinion something approaching a record. Rainbow Trout. It is reported that a local angler caught some small rainbow trout from the Aparima river lately and as the history of this particular species is at present engaging the attention of the local authorities, any further captures should be forwarded to the local Acclimitization Society secretary for identification purposes. * * * # In Recompense. At one o’clock this morning, the main streets of Invercargill presented an unusually gay appearance; all the flood-lights were alight, the station was brilliantly illuminated and taxis were to be seen on the street stands. Invercargill was doing its best to make up for the rather inclement weather conditions that prevailed. Motor Collision. About 11.30 last evening an accident occurred near the Troopers’ Memorial in Tay street when a Rugby car collided with a Chevrolet, fortunately without injury to the passengers. The damage sustained by the former lay in a crumpled fender, but the Chevrolet did not escape so easily, the running board and one of the back wheels being badly smashed. » * # * Fortunate Escape. Three occupants of a car had a fortunate escape from serious injury on Sunday night on the Riverton road. The lights of the car had fused and the driver followed in the rear of another car hoping to get sufficient assistance from its lights. When crossing a short bridge east of the iron bridge the second car got too far to one side and struck the bridge, the iron rail of the structure piercing the body of the car which dropped several feet into the culvert. Save for a bad shaking the occupants were not hurt.

Some Good Sport. Lately, Fortune has smiled genially on those fishermen who ply their lines on the Bluff wharf and record catches have been exceedingly common. One angler had a day of surprises last week, and he returned home that evening quite pleased with his day’s sport. Hardly had he cast his line in from the seaward encl of the wharf when ha felt a substantial bite. To his amazement he could make but little impression when hauling in and was quite unable to gather in his victim until he had summoned the help of a bystander. The double strain at last landed a fairsized octopus which had swallowed a red cod which was hooked. It took a deal of pulling and unavoidable mutilation to the repulsive denizen of the deep before the cord was extricated, the fish emerging in a whole condition and the heavy sinker appearing last of all. The next cast was similarly successful and very little time elapsed before another bit was felt. Aid was called again and a beautiful ling, four feet six inches in length, and weighing 251bs was finally landed. Two more ling and no less than fifteen cod, all of fair size, were hooked on the same afternoon, and there was scarcely a dull moment for the busy angler.
