Sir Benjamin Fuller was a passenger for Bluff by the Manuka which berthed at Bluff on Sunday night. Mr and Mrs G. V. Edge, who are old residents of Bluff and who have been on an extended tour, returned by the Manuka. Mr F. Waite, M.P., went off yesterday morning from Dunedin for Wellington to attend the National Industrial Conference. A London cablegram reports the death of Mr Samuel Clowes, the Labour membef for Hanley Division in the House of Commons, aged 64. By the Manuka which arrived at Bluff from Melbourne late on Sunday night Dr. and- Mrs Ewart returned to Invercargill from an extended trip to Britain and the Continent of Europe. The trustees of the Invercargill Saving! Bank have on the recommendation of the registrar of Otago University awarded the 1928 Savings Bank Scholarship to Mr D. U. Strang, an ex-pupil of the Southland Boys’ High School. Mr E. H. Pratten, Commonwealth Minister of Customs, and his private secretary (Mr H. R. Irving), accompanied by Mr L. J. Schmidtt, representing the Department of New Zealand Industries and Commerce, left Dunedin in the State railway carriage by the 11.34 express yesterday bound for Wellington. Mr George T. Booth, of Christchurch, is the only nomination for the position of Employers’ Representative on the Arbitration Court and has been duly elected. Sydney E. Wright, secretary of the Auckland Employers’ Association, was appointed Deputy Employers’ representative.—* Press Association message. Drs. Walton and Gladys Bremner (nee Gladys Macalister) have returned to London after five weeks’ holiday in Rome and in Montreaux on Lake Geneva. Cabled advice received yesterday states that Dr. Walton Bremner has been appointed resident surgical officer at the West Norfolk and Lynn Hospital, King’s Lynn, and takes up his duties there on April 1. Lieutenant-Commander Lang, R.N., arrived by the Remuera at Auckland on Sunday from England to take up the post of staff officer at Wellington. He has been sent to the New Zealand Government for three years, from February 3. His last service was as first lieutenant-commander in H.M.S. Benbow and H.M.S. Champion.—• Press Association. A Wellington telegram states: —Mr Peter Eady until recently proprietor of the New Zealand Scotsman, lately employed as canvasser, is reported to be missing. He took passage to Lyttelton on Wednesday in the Wahine and was spoken to by a steward after leaving. On reaching Lyttelton it was found his berth had not been occupied and Mr Eady’s coat and bag were there. He has not been heard of since. At the Rechabite Grand Conference held in Dunedin last week the retiring D.C.R. Sister E. Kennedy of Tuatapere, was presented with her official apron. She was also presented with a cheque in recognition of her services as District Chief Ruler during the past three years. At the same conference, Bro. G. Skipworth, of Hope of South Invercargill Tent, was elected to the office of District Guardian. Mr D. Jones, the sitting member for Ellesmere, is being mentioned as the probable Reform candidate for the Mid-Canter-bury seat, embracing Ellesmere and Ashburton, now incorporated, at the coming general election. It is said to be generally understood that the present member for Ashburton, Mr W. Nosworthy (Minister of External Affairs) will go to the Legislative Council. Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, C.M.G., who has for some years past occupied the position of president of the Wellington Rugby Union, stated at the annual meeting that he did not desire to seek re-election. Colonel Campbell said that he had thoroughly enjoyed his association with Rugby football, which he regarded as the king of all games, and his resignation was not to be taken as an indication that he had lost his interest. He would be pleased to assist at all times, even if it only meant cheering Wellington teams on to victory. General regret was expressed by delegates at the retirement of Colonel Campbell, and it was unanimously decided to elect him a vice-president. Mr A. F. Wiren, who has been a keen Rugby enthusiast for many years, was elected president. Prior to his departure for Christchurch Mr E. W. Henderson, who for the past eighteen months has been assistant locomotive foreman at Invercargill, was met by members of the locomotive staff and presented with a solid leather suitcase, suitably inscribed, and also a shaving companion. Mr Nisbet, locomotive foreman, in making the presentation spoke in glowing terms of the harmony which had existed between Mr Henderson and himself and also of the capable manner in which he had carried out his duties, and wished him every success in Christchurch. Messrs Clifford, Whiting, Edwards, Paterson, Burrell, Conley, Carter, Hutson, Mills and Lindsay also testified to the many good qualities of the guest and the very obliging manner in which he had met the men. Mr Henderson thanked the men for the spirit which prompted the presentation and also for their very complimentary remarks, paying a tribute to the work of Southland locomotive men.
