TAPANUI NOTES

KELSO A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Kelso A. and P. Association wag held last week, Mr W. Clark presiding over a large attendance of members. TRe annual report stated, inter alia, that the association had been faced with a large expenditure than usual, the large sum spent on the showgrounds and buildings nearly absorbing the credit balance and the year closed with a credit of only' £6 8/4. Thanks were due to the Press for the publicity given to their affairs and to Messrs. Wright Stephenson and 00. for the use of their office for committee meetings, also to donors of trophies and special prizes. Mr W. Clark was re-elected president and the following are the new office-bearers: vice-president: Messrs D. Crossan Senr., and C. McGillvray; secretary: Mr H. King; auditor, Mr R. F. Sim. Messrs R. Hamilton and D. Tripp were elected to fill vacancies on the committee. The appointment of judges was left to a special committee and the secretary was instructed to write to the various Breeders’ Associations for a list of approved judges. It was decided to hold the show on Wednesday, November 2. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last week when the Mayor (Mr W. R. Quin) presided over a full attendance. Councillor J. L. Wylie was granted leave of absence owing to illness. The Southland Electric Power Board stated that they had decided to strike a rate of 3-4 d. in the pound on the improved rateable value of the borough for the year 1927. Councillors Cameron and Edgar were authorised to sign the rate book. It was decided that the Hall Committee be asked to furnish a report as to the painting of the Town Hall and Council Chambers, and also as to the advisability of erecting lavatories in the hall. The bank pass-book showed a credit of £255 1/2 in the general account and 18/8 in the cemetery account. Accounts amounting to £4O 13/4 were passed for payment. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday last. Trustees in the estate of the late Peter Hay v. William J. Johnston, claim £1 7/6, goods supplied. Judgment by default for amount claimed, and costs 13/-. BY-LAW CASES. W. Simmonds, for allowing a cow to wander within the borough was convicted and ordered to pay costs 10/-. Augustus Munyard, who pleaded not guilty, for allowing eight head of cattle to wander, was ordered to pay costs 10/-. John Waite, who did not appear, was fined 10/- and costs 10/-for allowing a horse to wander at Crookston. Allan Kennedy, charged with allowing two head of cattle to wander at Dalvey and who did not appear, was fined 15/- and costs 10/-. Michael Cahill, on two charges of allowing his horse to wander was convicted on each charge and fined 10/- and costs 20/-. TAPANUI RACING CLUB. The annual meeting of the Tapanui Racing Club was held on Tuesday last, the president, Mr T. Edgar, presiding over an attendance of over 30 members. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet the president said that the club had now turned the corner and was on the high road to prosperity. The assets amounted to £1266 of which total £592 represented cash in the Post Office Savings Bank and £93 in credit in their current account, and the only liability was a balance on loan of £47. The balance-sheet was adopted without dissent. The election of officers resulted as follows :—President: Mr T. E. Edgar; vicepresident: Messrs C. Atkin, W. R. Quin, W. McLeod and M. McAuley; judge: Mr J. W. Jarrold; assistant judge: Mr J. C. Parcell; starter: Mr W. R. Quin; assistant starter: Mr A. S. Edgar; clerk of scales: Mr A. Haugh; handicapper, Mr Jones (at the same remuneration as last year, namely £10) ; clerk of course, Mr P. Collins; timekeepers: Messrs Lischner, W. McLeod and F. H. Cockerill; saddling paddock stewards: Messrs J. D. Edgar and O. Fraser; track stewards: Messrs R. McDonald and J. S. Edgar; programme committee: the President, Messrs W. R. Quin, C. Atkin, W. McLeod and Dr. Robertson; grounds committee: Messrs W. R. Quin, A. S. Edgar and O. Fraser; judicial committee: the President, Messrs J. D. Edgar, W. McLeod, A. Mclntyre and F. Lischner; privilege' committee: the President and Mr W. R. Quin; starter board: Mr J. Gosden; totalisator stewards: Messrs J. L. Hay and J. C. Cameron; stewards: Messrs F. Lischner, J. D. Edgar, A. S. Edgar, P. Collins, J. C. Cameron, A. J. Stiven, A. Mclntyre, R. H. Edie, R. McDonald, J. S. Edgar, J. L. Hay, A. Haugh and O. Fraser. Despite a good deal of opposition it was decided on a majority that a 10/- totalisator be installed for the next meeting, and the necessary alterations to the totalisator house were left to the grounds committee to have plans drawn and tenders called. The programme committee were recommended to reduce both the nomination and acceptance fees, and the grounds committee were asked to report on necessary improvements to the ladies’ cloakroom and grandstand. FIRE BRIGADE RE-UNION. The annual re-union of the local fire brigade was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday, when there was a large attendance of members and visitors. In the absence of the Mayor, Councillor J. S. Edgar referred to the good work of the brigade during the past year, and presented seven-year medals to Firemen J. L. Hay and K. Rodger, and five-year medals to Firemen R. Duff and A. Bradley. Those present took part in an enjoyable dance till the small hours. GIRL GUIDES. The executive met on Thursday afternoon and received reports from the ranger and Guide Companies and the Brownies. During the month the Guides had sent forward a box of clothing to a North Island Maori Company who was in distress. Ambulance lectures had been given by Miss Wylie, and Mr W. R. Quin was giving a series of talks to the Rangers on “Native Plants.” Judges were appointed to examine the girls for their ambulance, cookery and hostess badges. It was decided to hold a carnival about the end of September. GENERAL. Mr J. C. McClymont has disposed of his business in Tapanui to Mr J. S. Varcoe, at present manager of the Heriot branch of the Otago Farmers’ Co-op. Association. Mr Varcoe takes possession on September 1. Mr C. Atkin’s property near Tapanui was sold on Friday last, Mr W. Kirk being the successful bidder at £l3OO. Miss Watt, Hillend, has been appointed to a temporary position in the Tapanui School. Heriot senior team has won the SubUnion banner for the second year in succession. The annual meeting of the Tapanui Bowling Club was held on Tuesday last. The report stated that a successful year had been experienced, the new pavilion erected during the year making a distinct advance. The ladies were thanked for furnishing the building. The following officers were elected: President: Mr T. L. Floyd; vice-presi-dent: Mr J. Harrison; hon. secretary: Mr W. K. Gill; green supervisor: Mr J. Black; match committee: Messrs F. Lischner, Floyd and Jenkins; executive: the President, vicepresident, secretary and Messrs Stevens, and Buchanan; delegate to South Otago Centre, Mr Henderson.
