DISTRICT NEWS
BALL AT BALFOUR. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. (From Our Correspondent.) On Friday evening a highly successful ball was held in the new Public Hall at Balfour. In addition to a large number of local residents, settlers from all parts of the district attended and well over 100 couples took the floor, while the takings, which are to be devoted to the Hall Fund amounted to close on £4O. Mr T. Hood, chairman of the Bazaar Committee presided, and took the opportunity of thanking the public for the generous support given to the committee in its efforts to raise funds. The nett takings at the bazaar amounted to approximately £4OO and this was particularly gratifying. The committee desired to show its appreciation of the work done by the young people, and at a later date would give a free dance in their honour. The chairman also thanked the orchestra which had given its services at the bazaar and other functions free. The floor was in excellent order for dancing, and under Mr A. Savage, who carried out the duties of M.C., the evening passed off very pleasantly. The music was also good and was supplied by a local orchestra, the members of which were—Mr Tregonning (piano), Miss Keown (violin), Mr R. Walker (violin), Mr Shallard (saxophone), Mr R. Johnstone (violin), Mr J. Ginnivan (cornet), Mr W. Tregonning (clarinet), and the conductor, Mr T. Robertson (flute). A very dainty supper was served by the ladies to whom a very hearty vote of thanks was passed. . On Wednesday evening wk a public meeting will be held to dedMfhow the funds raised shall be invested. w
