THE PHILIPPINES
NOT BEADY FOR INDEPENDENCE. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Washington, July 7. Governor-General Wood, of the Philippines, after a conference with the Secretary of War, Mr Dwight F. Davis, said he hoped the Islands would remain under the War Department. This view conflicts with the suggestion made by President Coolidge for the transfer of the department to the Ministry of the Interior. General Wood said: “It needs the department’s strength to back it up as it will be some time before we are ready for independence. We have put our shoulder to the wheel and must see it through.”—A. and N.Z.
