Christchurch, July 1. The event of the week has been the announcement of the Minister of Agriculture in regard to the importation of Tasmanian potatoes. It was recognised that an embargo without some valid reason could not be imposed on account of the reciprocity agreement existing between the two countries, but that New Zealand growers would be satisfied if the inspection were as rigorous as was the case with dominion potatoes entering the Commonwealth. The Minister’s statement was on these lines. The Wingatui at the beginning of the week took away 11,400 sacks for Auckland, and the Kurow on Wednesday 3200 sacks. The market to-day advanced half-a-crown a ton and July’s are quoted at £5 7/6 f.0.b., s.i., whilst July-September’s are at £5 17/6. Farmers are being quoted £3 15/- to £4 a ton, but when the tubers are in pit they are not going to be taken out at this price, and where still in the ground it is too wet and broken for digging. The Wingatui’s big consignment cleared away a lot Of the potatoes in store. Dakotas have eased to £6 12/6 f.0.b., s.i. There is little doing in wheat which is quoted at round about 6/- on trucks, for Tuscan, and 6/3 for Hunters on trucks. White oats are easier and A’s are quoted at 3/4 to 3/4A f.o.b. s.i. July B’s are quoted at 3/1. There is little inquiry as Australia does not want white oats. Prices on trucks are from 2/8 to 2/10 for A’s, and 2/6 for B’s. Business continues with Victoria for Algerians, they having been sold at 3/6 f.0.b., s.i. for shipment. Reports from the South in regard to the dogstail crop are that it was a good one. Values hardened locally up to 140/- per cwt, f.0.b., for dressed seed, but this caused a lull in business for export and prices have declined slightly. Fescue has also been a good crop and some export has taken place. ,Best quality machine-dressed, is quoted at 8d a lb. At the moment however, there is little outside demand. Perennial ryegrass has been sold during the week at 4/3 f.0.b., Lyttelton, for 27-281 b seed. On truck values are from 2/9 to 3/-. Italian is quoted at 3/- dressed, with no inquiry. For on trucks 1/9 is ruling. Cocksfoot is very dull with prices on trucks at 5d to 6d a lb. Cowgrass 8d to 9d, this commodity also being little inquired for. METAL MARKET.
