MARIST BROTHERS
CONCERT BY SCHOOL PUPILS. There was a very large attendance in Victoria Hall last evening when pupils of the Marist Brothers school assisted by local performers gave a particularly enjoyable programme of musical and elocutionary items. The chief item on the first part of the programme was a debate on the subject : “Whether education or commercial enterprise confers more lasting benefits on the country.” The speakers were pupils of the secondary school and some pointed arguments were adduced, the standard of the speeches being on a creditably high plane. Another very fine item was Qie presentation of a scene from the “Merchant of Venice” in which eight pupils played the scene in the Court of Justice. The various characters were:—Duke of Venice, D. Davin; Antonio, B. Beadle; Bassanio, F. Rooney; Gratiano, J. Pasco: Portia, T. Rillstone; Nerissa, C. Campbell; Shylock, B. Butler; Salero, P. Stokes. A further Shakespearean scene was one from “King John” in which Prince Arthur (J. Pound) pleads with Hubert (J. O’Sullivan) not to burn out his eyes. The remainder of the programme was as follows: —Song, Mr A. Staunton; recitation, Mr J. Shepherd; clog dance, Miss M. Thorn’s pupils; song, the Rev. Father Hally; song, Miss K. Woods; duet, Masters J. and B. Pound; song, Mr J. Ferry; Irish reel, Miss M. Thorn’s pupils; song, Mass R. Shepherd; song, Mr C. Murfitt. Selections were also given by an orchestra under the conductorship of Mr J. McDonald.
