A NEW WHARF

PETITION FROM STEWART ISLAND. Further representations are to be made to the Minister of Marine, the Hon. G. J. Anderson, in regard to the necessity for the immediate erection of a new wharf at Half Moon Bay. Yesterday the Southland League prepared a petition on behalf of Stewart Island residents which will be forwarded to the Prime Minister and Members of Parliament after the necessary signatures have been secured. The petition is as follows—- “ That we are greatly perturbed at the need for the immediate erection of a new wharf at Half Moon Bay, Stewart Island. “That when the Bluff Harbour Board’s new ferry steamer Southland is ready to commence running to Stewart Island she will be unable to safely berth at the present wharf except under the most favourable weather conditions. “That under these circumstances the tourist traffic will be seriously jeopardised, and as we have to rely on the tourist traffic this source of revenue will be practically cut off if the wharf is not erected before the commencement of the tourist season. “That as Stewart Island is unique in its scenic attractions and has been steadily becoming more popular amongst Dominion and Australian tourists during recent years, the tourist traffic of the Dominion will be affected if the wharf is not erected immediately. “Wherefore your petitioners pray that, as the cost of the wharf will be £3OOO, the Government add £2OOO to the vote of £lOOO already provided by the Minister of Marine. Your petitioners further emphasise the urgency of the matter in view of the fact that there will be considerable delay in procuring the necessary supplies of hardwood timber.”
