SYDNEY DEMANDS VALUE FIRST. NO PREFERENCE FOR BRITISH GOODS. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, June 15. A stay of proceedings was granted when the City Council was discussing recommendations from the Finance Committee that a motor-car to be bought for the use of the Lord Mayor, and a typewriter should be of British manufacture. Aiderman Shannon, who said that he was speaking for the Labour Caucus moved an amendment removing the restriction to British makes. He said the committee’s recommendation gave undue preference to British manufactures. He added that there were cheaper cars to be had than British. The amendment was carried.—A. and N.Z.
