PICTURE INDUSTRY
POSITION IN AUSTRALIA. EXISTENCE OF COMBINE DENIED. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Melbourne, June 10. Giving evidence before the Film Commission Mr Gibson, Managing Director of the Union Theatres, denied that there was any film combine. So far as they were concerned they had never blocked an Australian picture and if they considered an Australian or British film was one that the people wanted they bought it. They had made two Australian pictures which had never been and never would be shown, because they were not up to standard. To do any good for the British industry it would be necessary to show from thirty to fifty per cent. British films, and they were not available. They received no commission, directly or indirectly, from American firms.—A. and N.Z.
