A London cable states that Mr Dyett has been appointed chairman of the Empire Service League Conference. Mr S. G. Ward, of the local branch of Electrolux, Ltd., left on Thursday morning to take over the managership of the Wanganui branch of the firm. Messrs J. E. Cuthill, J. Mangan and C. A. Masters were passengers for Dunedin by the express yesterday. They intend to take part in a golf match at St. Clair (Dunedin) to-day. Mr Irvine Elston, advance agent for J. C. Williamson’s Renee Kelly Company, which opens in Invercargill on June 20, arrived by the express yesterday at mid-day, and remains over the week-end. Mr H. L. Dolamore, general manager of the New Zealand Paper Mills, Ltd., who has been on a visit to the. company’s Mat aura mill, returned to Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. An inquiry late last evening as to the condition of Owen Longuet, who was injured in a motor accident earlier in the week, elicited the information that there was no change in his condition. An Adelaide wire states -Mrs Winifred Kirk will be ordained on Monday as a minister of the Congregational Church in South Australia. She will be the first woman ordained as a minister of religion in Australia. Private advice was received in Invercargill yesterday to the effect that Mr John Farrell, well-known as advance agent for J. C. Williamson Companies, had undergone an operation for appendicitis and is making good progress. At the annual conference of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mr R. L. Byars referred to the possibility of Mr W. J. Polson, Dominion president, refusing re-nomination to the office at the forthcoming Dominion Conference. He moved that the Provincial Conference urge Mr Polson to accept nomination for a further term if at all possible. Mr H. Smith seconded this motion, which was carried unanimously. At the commencement of the Southland County Council meeting yesterday, Mr T. Golden (chairman) referred to the sad loss experienced by their engineer (Mr. B. C. Basstian) in the death of his mother. The deceased lady was an old identity of Southland, said Mr Golden, and had left a long record of splendid social work behind her. It was decided to forward a letter of condolence to Mr Basstian, members standing in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Mrs. Basstian.
