! DEER IN WAIAU DISTRICT. FARMERS ISSUE PROTEST. The extensive ravages of deer in the i Waiau district formed the subject of a • remit forwarded by the Waiau branch of j the Farmers’ Union to the Provincial Con- . ference at Invercargill yesterday. ■ The remit was as follows—- • “That this conference, being not satisfied ■ with the reply of the Hon. O. Hawken rei garding the deer in the Lilburn and Waiau ’ Valleys, would point out that at the rate , the deer are increasing something should ibe done soon to cope with the pest, (a) i As the growing of winter feed,, owing to its 1 destruction by deer, will soon only be a waste of time. (b) That the carrying I capacity of all lands in these localities will : also be seriously curtailed, (c) That irre--1 sponsible persons, encouraged to trespass on ; these lands by the bounty for the killing i of deer, are a nuisance to property-owners, ' as they have not much consideration for I stock.” | Mr C. Gardner, referring to the increasing ravages of the deer in the Waiau disI trict, stated that farming generally, and i cropping particularly, was becoming an in- | creasingly unprofitable business in that ' locality as the result. The payment of 2/- ; per head for the killing of deer was most I unsatisfactory to land-owners because it en- ■ couraged all kinds and conditions of irre- ’ sponsible persons on to one’s property. He • hoped the conference would give the remit ' unanimous support. j Mr Hill seconded, and the chairman supported the contention that the menace of the deer was a very real one. Carried.
