MOTOR REGISTRATION

RENEWAL OF NUMBER PLATES. DISCUSSION AT FARMERS’ CONFERENCE. i The following remit concerning the method of registering motor vehicles was forwarded for consideration at the annual Provincial Conference of the Farmers' Union yesterday by the Otama Branch—" That the j necessary steps be taken to urge the Gov- | eminent to devise some method when registering motor vehicles, to do so without i scrapping the old number plates, as the manufacturing of plates each year creates a waste of public money.” It was stated by Mr Bruce that the sum of £15,000 was involved in the annual manufacture of plates, and in seconding the motion Mr C. Gardner remarked that not only was the annual changing of plates unI necessary, but was the cause of no little confusion to owners themselves—(Hear, hear). He suggested that the issue of paper discs might suit the purpose for which the changing of plates was instituted. Mr. D. Dickie explained that last year’s plates had cost £ll,OOO whilst Mr. A. R. Johnston stated that the only way to avoid j the scrapping of the plates was to return : them for repainting. ! A member suggested that if re-painting 1 was resorted to people might do the job “on ; their own account.” (Laughter). The motion was lost on the voices.
