PUKEMAORI HALL

OPENING CEREMONY. (From Our Correspondent.) The residents of Pukemaori and district assembled in large numbers on Wednesday evening to celebrate the opening of the new hall. The building was totally inadequate to accommodate the large gathering, and many had to be content to listen to the proceedings outside. Mr Adam Hamilton, M.P., who was present by invitation, in declaring the hall open, stated that it was a great asset to the district, and residents could now gather and hold socials, dances, etc. He congratulated them on the progressive spirit displayed. Mr D. King, chairman of the committee, who presided, thanked Mr Hamilton for his remarks, after which a very fine concert programme was rendered, which was enthusiastically received, most of the performers having to respond to encores. The following were the individual items—An overture by the orchestra; songs by Mesdames Bradley, Lindsay and Gifford, Misses Findlay, V. King, Gill and Whyte, Messrs G. Findlay, A. Prentice, Harris, C. Yates (Otautau) and G. Muir; duet by Misses Peggy Sim and Flora Browne; recitation by Mr Frank Hendry; song and dance by school boys; and two songs by girls. The accompaniments for the singers were tastefully played by Mrs Lindsay, Miss Stephens and Mr Jellyman. After supper had been partaken of, dancing was indulged in to splendid music supplied by Jellyman’s orchestra, at which about 150 people were present. Proceedings went with a swing from start to finish, and the committee, with Mr D. King as chairman and Mr A. Findlay as secretary, is to be congratulated on the excellence of the arrangements. The following were noticed amongst those present at the dance—Mr and Mrs P. Whyte, Mr and Mrs E. K. Sim, Mr and Mrs R. Froude, Mr and Mrs Mac Gibbon, Mr and Mrs C. Bush, Mr and Mrs W.
