CARNIVAL COMMITTEE

WEEKLY MEETING. The weekly meeting of the Carnival Committee was held in the Southland League rooms yesterday afternoon, Mr P. Shaw presiding. SLOGAN ADOPTED. The chairman said he thought it would be advisable to have a slogan which they could bring before the public as much as possible. It was decided that the carnival would be “Southland’s May Fair.” DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL. It was decided to form a deputation to wait on the council on Tuesday evening and submit an outline of what is being done in connection with the carnival. One or two requests would be put before the members of the council for their consideration. The Mayor is to be asked to assist at the opening ceremony; the question of lighting will be brought up; permission will be sought to run boys’ races in the main street; the provision of a decorated train will be asked for, and a request will be made for the use for a week of the band rotunda. FINANCE COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The Finance Committee reported that the tradespeople of the town had been extensively circularised. The response in answer to requests for financial assistance had been quite satisfactory. It was decided to approach professional men in an effort to enlist their co-operation and assistance. GENERAL BUSINESS. A rough draft of the carnival proceedings was submitted by the Programme Committee. Several additions and alterations were made, with the result that the committee will be in a position to publish the complete programme of events within a day or two. A member suggested the holding of children’s tricycle races. This was pronounced a good idea, the suggestion being adopted. The president said the W.C.T.U. had written to the committee asking that Professor Fisher be permitted to give a lecture on the subject of the League of Nations during the currency of the carnival. It was decided to agree to the request. It was decided to write to the schools, drawing the attention of the children to the pets’ parade and character sketch. Mr Shaw stated that an effort would be made to arrange a Star v. Pirates football match on the Saturday.
