HIGH SCHOOL HOSTEL
ANONYMOUS DONATION SUPPLEMENTED. SPECIAL GOVERNMENT GRANT. At last night’s meeting of the High Schools’ Board, a letter was read from the Education Board, as follows regarding the anonymous offer of £4OOO towards the erection of a hostel at the Boys’ High School:— “The Department is in receipt of your memorandum of December 3, stating that your Board has been offered a donation of £4OOO towards the cost of providing a hostel for country boys attending the Southland Boys’ High School, on the condition that the Board secures within 12 months a further sum of not less than £6,000 to bo devoted towards the same purpose. It is invariably the practice of the Government to ask the name of the donor and any particulars of the gift in confidence. The Government will favourably consider the Board’s proposal to provide a subsidy at the rate of £1 for £1 on the donation after April 1 next and within the stipulated twelve months, and will also at the same time be prepared favourably to consider a special grant of £2OOO, making a total of £6,000.”
The letter was held over for further action.
