COUNCIL SEATS

NOT FOR SITTING ON. If anyone in Invercargill were asked the conundrum “When is a seat not a seat?” he should find a ready reply in the words “When it is owned by the corporation.” At any rate some of the seats placed at the corners for the convenience of passengers waiting for trams are seats in name only, and would wreck havoc on the garments of any of the fair sex tired enough, or unwise enough, to sit on them. A reporter having occasion to pass the seat at the corner of Tay and Conon Streets wondered why of the many people standing waiting for a tram, none rested his or her limbs on the seat. A glance at that d lapidated object made him understand. Apparently those responsible for the upkeep of this and other seats had gone to sleep months ago. When they wake up the woodwork will have been scattered as dust to the four corners of the earth, and another generation will be standing there.
