GALLANT STOKER
SINKING OF THE VALERIAN. (Rec. 11 j p.m.) London, December 5. The survivors off the Valerian have arrived in London. The men particularly praise one of the stokers who swam with a lifebelt from a raft saying he was “out visiting,” and cheered up the men who were in an exhausted condition after twenty-one hours in the sea.—A. & N.Z. The loss of the British sloop of war Valerian occurred in a hurricane which swept Bermuda in October. It is believed that 80 of the crew of the Valerian were lost. Nineteen survivors were picked up by the H.M.S. Capetown from a raft on which they had been afloat for twenty-four hours. According to one seaman the Valemian turned turtle. Captain Osher, the commander, and one officer were saved.
