HIGH SCHOOLS
MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Southland High Schools Board was held in the Education Board rooms yesterday evening. Present—Mr R. M. Strang (chairman), Messrs P. de la Perrelle and A. Bain. The rector of the Boys’ School reported that in accordance with instructions a census was taken of boarders and train boys. Summarised, the position was that 34 boys were boarding and 40 others travelled bv train daily, some coming from as far as Nightcaps. If the inquiry was made about the hostel he advised that every year there were 30 to 40 boys boarding in town, and •fcat Southland could easily fill 50 beds for a start. Since the last meeting of the board the school held its annual sports meeting and the boys and masters entered in heartily. A team was sent to Dunedin for the combined secondary schools’ sports meeting. Second place was secured in the senior championship and first in the junior championship, the school winning the interschool Challenge Shield for the latter item. A recommendation was also made for the levelling of the playing fields. The report was adopted, the chairman stating that the matter of the playing fields had been attended to. The Lady Principal reported that the results of the teachers’ D examination held i& August were quite satisfactory, 27 girls gaining passes in one or more groups. The Southland Amateur Sports Trust had offered a medal for the school sports champion. The suggested dates for the terms next year were February 8 to May 6, May 24 to August 19, September 13 to December 16. The report was adopted, the dates of the terms being fixed at 14 weeks for the first term and 13 for the second. It was decided to donate £l5 towards the prize fund of each school, the date of the combined break-up ceremony being left to the chairman to arrange. A grant of £5 was also made to the respective libraries of the two schools. Captain J. L. Cameron, Officer Commanding the School Cadet Corps, wrote asking for financial assistance towards the purchase of rifles for the cadets.—To be asked to forward the money in hand and a supply of six rifles would be procured from the incidental account. It was decided to make application to the department for a grant of £4BO for improvements to the girls’ hostel. The chairman reported that the sum of £67 had been raised as the result of the recent concert. The Southland Amateur Sports Trust forwarded a donation of £25 for improvements to the schools sports grounds. A donation of £lO was also received from the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce towards the cost of an agricultural plot.
