LUMSDEN NOTES

CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. (From Our Correspondent.) The meeting convened for the purpose of endeavouring to revive the Lumsden Caledonian Society was held on Monday and was presided over by Mr T. Small. There was an attendance of about thirty residents and a great deal of enthusiasm was displayed. Mr Small in opening the meeting stated that he had been requested by several residents to convene the meeting and he was pleased to see such a large attendance. The objects of the meetin? would be to decide whether or not a sports meeting should be held this season and he would like to receive suggestions from those present. On the motion of Mr F. Keith it was unanimously decided that a sports meeting be held and l>e conducted by the Lumsden Caledonian Society. The election of officers for the ensuing year proceeded and the following are the results: Patron, Mr G. F. Johnston; president, Mr T. Small; vice-presidents: Messrs A. McAlister, W. Roxburgh, A. Small, T. Reidy, A. Drummond, P. Drummond, G. Hamilton, J. Crosbie, J. Isaacs, James Earl; secretary, Mr F. Keith, treasurer, Mr W. Johnson; committee: Messrs A. J. Earl, O. Taylor, W. Biggar, J. McAuley, G. Tomlin, H. Hall, J. Watson, A. Heath, F. Belesky, W. Burgess, H. Dagg; handicappers: running events, Mr F. Christie, field events, Mr J. R. Thompson; judges: running events: Messrs A. Small, J. McAlister and W. Biggar; field events: Messrs Taylor, Watson, Crawford and McAuley; piping and dancing, Mr T. Reidy; timekeeper, Mr E. McDonald; starter, Mr T. Menzies.

The president stated that he had made endeavours to unearth the books of the society in order to ascertain the position of the society at the time when the last sports meeting was held about 1914 but was unsuccessful. It was suggested that the records may have been burnt in the fire which took place in 1918, but it is hoped that further efforts on the part of the committee may re suit in the books being revealed.

The membership fee was fixed at 5/- per member and the secretary was instructed to procure tickets. It was decided to bold the sporte meeting on a Saturday in January, the secretary to write to the Southland Caledonian Society for all particulars. The matter of drawing up the programme was left in the hands of the committee and to be submitted to a general meeting later.

Messrs E. McDonald. J. Ogilvy, and T. Menzies were appointed a committee to go into the matter and arrange for the measuring of the ground. It was decided that tenders be called for the refreshment booth, and that a dance be held on the night of the sports Mr A. Reidy to be convener of the dance committee.

A sum of money will be spent on children’s events during the day and the following committee was appointed to take charge of these events. Messrs Hail, Sherriff, McAuley and Moloney. The admission fee was fixed at 1/6, children of school age free. A meeting of the committee was held after the meeting and a fairly lengthy programme was drawn up. A good sum of money will ba required to conduct the sports meeting but financial assistance has been promised by a good number of enthusiasts and judging by the enthusiasm shown at the meeting, there is very prospect of the day being as successful as those in former years.
