FACTIONS CLASH IN SHANGHAI. MARTIAL LAW PROCLAIMED. Pekin, October 27. There is considerable apprehension at Shanghai as the outcome of the present guerilla warfare between Canton’s agents and Chinese soldiers. In addition to instituting martial law in the territory outside the foreign settlements a 7 o’clock curfew has been ordered. All aboard after that will be arrested. Pass words are employed at the settlement boundaries without which none will be permitted to cross. Patrol waggons mounted with machine-guns and filled with armed police supplement squads of infantry. When discovered shots were exchanged and the guards overpowered the spies. A bomb was found in the pocket of each. Many spies have already been executed.—A. and NX
