UNEMPLOYMENT
RELIEF MEASURES FOOD IN RETURN FOR WORK HOSPITAL BOARD’S SCHEME OBJECTED TO (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, October 27. While the unemployed problem has been acute in Christchurch, the Hospital Board has received many applications for relief. The practice followed in cases where the applicants were able bodied was to require the men to do a day’s work in the grounds in return for 10/- worth of food given. At a recent meeting of the unemployed exception was taken to this action by the hospital management. It was argued that men should not be required to do work in return for relief and that if called upon to work they should receive wages at award rates, or relief equivalent to 14/-, instead of 10/-. A deputation from the unemployed waited on the Board to-day to urge this claim. . The chairman, Mr O. Hay, said the Board did not employ applicants for relief, but simply asked them to work when they had nothing else to do. The suggestions of the deputation were referred by the Board to the Benevolent Committee.
