ANGLING

MATAURA CLUB’S COMPETITIONS. (From Our Correspondent.) The first competitions of the season were held during last week-end commencing on Saturday at noon and lasting until 5 pan. on Labour Day. The Mat aura River was mostly fished by competitors and it was in splendid order several very good ones being secured. The fish were not taking well on Monday. The principal lures were Dark Jessie, Red Quill Knat, and the No. 4 Jessie. Mr H. Wilcoxs was successful in the open competition with a nice bag of 37 trout weighing 28 lbs 10 ozs. In the novice competition Master Ronnie Calder put up a good performance by securing a bag of 32 fish weighing 31 lbs 12 ozs, and he secured the most of them in one day. X large number of the club’s members and others attended the weigh-in at Mr Sleeman’s premises, the fish being received by the judge, Mr M. Maley and his assistant, Mr J. Quilter. The total catch was 180 fish, weighing 161 lbs 10 ozs, and 60 parcels were distributed amongst the nonfishing members of the club. The result of the competition is as follows : Open competition, any stream, any legal bait —H. Wilcox 37 fish 28 lbs 10 ozs 1, H. Cotterell 30 fish 23 lbs 6 ozs 2, D. McGowan 21 fish 20 lbs 10 ozs 3. Hie first competition for the season under the auspices of the Gore Angling Club was held on the Waipahi during the week-end with some 16 contestants. The stream was in excellent order, but conditions generally militated against successful fishihg, so that the baskets returned were very disappointing. Few fish were moving in the stream, while those that were doing so in the still water could see too well for the angler. The competition resulted as follows: James Tinnock, BJlbs, 1 George Young, 541bs 2 W T . McKenzie, heaviest fish, 21bs 12ozs. JUVENILE COMPETITION. A juvenile competition held on the Mataura on Monday resulted as follows: V. Graham 31bs 4ozs, 1. J. Worsfold, 21bs 12 ozs, 2. W. Graham secured the prize for the heaviest fish with 2} lbs. J. Worsfold secured the special prize for largest number of fish. There were seven entries.
