BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETINC The fortnightly meeting of the Invercargill Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr Andrew Bain), and Councillors A. J. Geddes, W. H. Boyes, G. R. Cooper, C. J. Broad, J. D. Campbell, J. Miller, J. Tattersfield, C. B. Tapley, G. Winter and E. Sheehan. An apology for absence was received from Councillor ■H. J. Farrant. Edmund R. Wilson wrote confirming his offer to Councillor Farrant to carry out the design and supervision required in the erection in Queen’s Park of a band rotunda free of cost to the corporation. He was pleased to do that as a contribution to the beautifying of the Park and to help the worthy effort of the trustees of the old Dominion Band.—Received, and oiter accepted with thanks. The honorary secretary of the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote that the subsidised scheme between the association and the council would cease from October 30, 1926. The association regretted that it was unable to keep the subsidy going after that date as the demand on the unemployment fund has been particularly heavy. The council was thanked for the assistance it so readily gave during the period of acute unemployment.—Received. The Wanganui City Council requested that, if it did not cause the Invercargill Council undue inconvenience, it should retain the services of Mr Gumbley till the middle of November, as several important works were being undertaken.—Granted. James Dawson and John Steele requested that an asphalt path be laid between Gordon street and Martin Road on Princess street, Enwood.—Referred to Works Committee. J. E. Bews wrote requesting that a tramway stop, when required, should be made on the outward journey in Conon street at signal points as was formerly the case.— Referred to Tramways Committee. The Principal of the Technical College, Mr C. A. Stewart, invited the Mayor and councillors to visit the college at any time that might be convenient, and mentioned that the annual exhibition of work was arranged for November 20.—Received. A number of ratepayers petitioned for an asphalt path in George street north, which improvement had been promised eighteen months ago.—Deferred for consideration.
