SIR JAMES CARROLL
BODY LYING IN STATE. MESSAGE OF SYMPATHY FROM THE KING. (Per United Press Association.) Gisborne, October 24. The love and esteem in which the late Sir James Carroll was held was shown by the lasge attendance \to view his body which was lying in state this afternoon. Between 1,000 and 1,500 pakehas from all parts of Poverty Bay passed in a continuous stream at the foot of the coffin. Lady Carroll has received the following telegram from the Hon. W. Do.wnie Stewart: “The Right Hon. J. G. Coates in London has asked me to communicate to you the following letter which he has received from the Private Secretary to His Majesty the King”— ‘The King and Queen have heard through the Press with much regret of the death of Sir James Carroll, whose acquaintance they made in New Zealand 25 years ago, -and have ever followed with interest his remarkable and distinguished career. Their Majesties ask if you would kindly convey an expression of their sympathy to Lady Carroll in her bereavement.” (Signed) Stamfordham.
