DISTRESSING CASE
MARRIED WOMAN DROWNED. HUSBAND APPEARS DRUNK AT INQUEST. (Per United Press Association.) Ashburton, October 22. ivhen the inquest was opened last evening for the purpose of taking formal evidence of identification of Bridget McGinn, who was drowned in the Ashburton river, her husband was placed under arrest on a charge of drunkenness. The Coroner said McGinn was so much under the influence of liquor that he would not allow him into the morgue. It was a standing disgrace that a man should be in such a condition when going to identify the body of his dead wife. He had asked the police to take McGinn in charge and bring him before the Magistrate in the morning The ages of deceased’s children range from six years to fourteen months. She was recently separated from her husband. Mr Mosley, S.M., remanded McGinn for a week in custody, accused to be allowed to attend his wife’s funeral if he desired.
