P. AND T. REVENUE. SAVINGS BANK TRANSACTIONS. An increase of nearly £50,000 is revealed in the return of postal and telegraph revenue for the third quarter of the current year, which was made available recently, says the Dominion. In the Savings Bank branch, however, withdrawals again exceeded deposits, although the margin has diminished somewhat. A comparison of the figures for the 1926 and 1925 third quarters indicates that while the deposits decreased, the withdrawals fell off to an even greater extent.
The postal revenue collected throughout the Dominion for the quarter which ended on September 30 amounted to £370,169 12s as compared with £353,688 18s 9d. for the corresponding period last year. The return from the General Post Office was £61,722 10s. 3|d., and from Wellington £48,128 os. 74d. Auckland returned £72,690 6s. Id., Christchurch £38,916 14s. 8d and Dunedin £23,766 Ils.
The telegraph revenue totalled £408.559 17s 6d., as against £375,360 17s 9|d- f° T the third quarter last year. The General Post Office return was £20,722 17s. 9d., the other principal results being:—Wellington, £61,406 17s Ud.; Dunedin, £57,405 6s 64d.; Auckland, £35,071 9s. lid; Christchurch, l4s 7id. The nunTOer of ordinary telegrams, including paid Government messages, handled as 1,293,981, as against 1,351,135 for the third quarter last year. Other items, with the comparative figures in parentheses, were —Urgent ordinary telegrams, 63,360 (69,102) ; night letter-telegrams, 102,623 (66,561) ; Press telegrams, 140,885 (126,866) ; toll communications, 2,216,036 (2,166,226) ; total, 3,816,885 (3,779,890). The total postal and telegraph revenue as £778,729 9s 94d., as against £729,049 16s 6id. for th: corresponding period last year, an increase of £49,679 13s 3d. Savings Bank and Money Orders.—The money-order transactions showed a slight decrease, the totals being £1,202,060 10s 2d. Snd £1,203,300 7s 3d. for the 1926 and 1"?5 quarters respectively. In the savings-bank branch, withdrawals showed an excess over deposits, but the comparative figures revealed that the margin was lower. For the quarter just ended 17,697 accounts were opened, compared with 3°.4C8 for the third 1925 quarter and 17,697 closed (26,126) in the 1925 quarter. There were 391,890 deposits (380,496) and 300,718 withdrawals (298,877). The deposits amounted to £7,533,915 16s sd. (£8,779,104 13s 3d.), and withdrawals totalled £7,801,617 9s 4d. (£9,063,086 Is 5d.). The excess of v’ithdrawals over deposits was £267,701 12s lid., as against £283,981 8s 2d. for the third quarter last year. Wellington and Christchurch were two of the six places where the deposits were greater than the ■ ’ithdrawals, the margins being, respectively, £32,509 ss. 6d. and £lB,lOl 15s. 7d.
