HEROIC RESCUE

BOY ON CLIFFS 11 1 UNABLE TO GET UP OR DOWN MAN’S DARING CLIMB (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, October 25. A thrilling rescue under perilous conditions was performed on the cliffs at Sumner to-day. A boy was observed on the face of a cliff by a party of fishermen in a boat. The lad could not get up or down. An attempt was made to lower a rope to him, but he was over 300 feet from the , top and could not be reached. A lifeboat was then taken to the foot of the cliff at great risk owing to the surf breaking on the jagged rocks. One of the crew climbed 70 feet, but could not get closer than five feet from the boy. The man returned to the boat, got a rope and, climbing the cliff again, threw the rope end to the boy, who made it fast and lowered himself to his rescuer. The performance of the difficult and hazardous feat aroused widespread admiration among the helpless onlookers.
