GREAT SLIP

RAILWAY BLOCKED ! LANDSLIDE IN MANAWATU GORGE THREE CHAINS OF TRACK COVERED (Per United Press Association,) Palmenton North, October 23. The greatest landslide which has occurred in the Manawatu Gorge for a number of years overwhelmed the railway line at the mouth of the second tunnel from here at about 10 o’clock yesterday morning. The occurrence was witnessed by Mr Robert Stevens while motoring through from Dannevirke. He communicated with the stationmaster here and by noon 30 men were on the job but were obliged to cease operations at evening on account of the risk of falling debris in the darkness. Work was resumed this morning and will continue (this evening and powerful acetylene flares have been brought on the job by train from Wanganui. It was impossible to tranship passengeta to-day on account of the risk occasioned by falling rocks from the heights, but it is hoped to do so this evening. The time of re-opening the line is problematical, depending upon the behaviour of the great mass of loose earth high up on the hillside. The slip is fully 200 feet high and completely covers a good three chains of the track, consequently no trains are passing through the gorge to-day.
