A SUCCESSFUL MEETING CLOSES. BEACON UGHT WINS CHAMPION PLATE. “SURPRISE OF THE DAY.” INCREASED MACHINE FIGURES. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, October 25. The second and concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club’s Spring meeting was held in splendid weather, though there was a strong wind blowing. The totalisator investments amounted to £120,381 for the two days, as against £119,970 last year, an increase of £1,311. The surprise of the day was the Champion Plate in which the public went for Te Monanui. The Tarapaki gelding flattered his admirers for a period, hut was soundly beaten in the run home by Beason Light, trained by the veteran Hawke’s Bay mentor, Stuart WaddeJl. Beacon Light appeared to show a reversal of form on the first day’s running. After the race the stewards made an official announcement that they had fully inquired into the running of Beacon Light and accepted the explanation given by the parties connected with the horse. The Spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was concluded at Trantham to-day in fine weather and on a good track. A high wipd made matters unpleasant in the early part, but it dropped after about the third race. Beacon Light’s victory in the Champion Hate was a facer for backers, as he had run last on Saturday in the Wellington Handicap, He scored very decisively to-day. His win met with a mixed reception. Shirley was responsible for a brilliant effort in the Nainai Handicap. No Riccarton penalties are entailed by Beacon

There was a large attendance and the tottdisator handled £72,332, an increase of £47 10/- on last Labour Day, Carawock was a slightly better favourite for the Second Hurdle Handicap than Star Shell. Koauau was the best backed of the others. Through the straight the order was Lady Passenger. Gauntlet, Star Shell, Carawock and Te Maire. Entering the straight Star Shell took the lead from Lady Passenger and Gauntlet, Te Maire heading the bunch. At the five furlongs post Star Shell led with Lady Passenger from Gauntlet, Te Maire and Radiac. Crossing the top the order was Star Shell, Lady Passenger, Gauntlet and Te Maire. Koauau moved up approaching the straight, where Star Shell led from Lady Passenger, Gauntlet and Radiac. Star Shell and Lady Passenger both hit .hard at the last fence and nearly fell, but recovered, and Star Shell came on to beat Lady Passenger by a length, with Radiac two lengths away third, a neck in front of Gauntlet. There was a gap to Carawock, Maunga and Te Maire. Resinous was a firm favourite for the Trial Stakeg, solid support being accorded Haze and Tholomon, and Royal Picture were the best backed of the others. Royal Picture was left at the post, Bronstell showing out from the start from Jeniidar, Resinous, and Cerf. This was the order down the back. Welkne took charge at the top from Bronstell, Jemidar, Gerf, Hage and Vesperus, Resinous dropping back from the lead. Haze, Tholomon and Green Cloth m close order led into the straight from Jemidar and Vesperus. Haze was winning at the distance where Vesperus pame aloqg with a strong challenge and going on won by a length from Haze, who was a length and a-half clear. No Favours, General Wai and Jemidar were only heads away, then came Tholomon and Cerf, Queen’s Choice was favourite for the Tararua Handicap, nearly twice as well backed than Black Duke, who was closely followed by Our Jack. Sovena was the best backed of the others, Inoe showed out first at the start, followed by Gardant, Outfit and Black Duke. Down the back Outfit was in charge from Sovena, Gardant, Black Duke and Lin Arlington, Crossing the top Outfit, Rascal and Sovena were the leaders, with Gardant and Black Duke dropping back. Outfit ran into the straight from Gardant, Sovena, Rascal and Lin Arlington and was clear at the distance, where Queen’s Choice came through on the inside, and, with a brilliant run, cut Outfit down to win by a length, Gardant was three lengths away with Our Jack, followed by Rascal, Catcall, Sovena and Lin Arlington. R. Reed rode a splendidly-judged race on the winner, who lost a handy position five furlongs from home. Black Duke dropped out at the half-mile post. > Ti Tree was a solid favourite for the two-year-old Handicap, .the best-backed of the others being Arrow Lad and Frenzied Finance. Town Bracken, Frenzied Finance and Arrow Lad were the best in getting away. Running for the straight the order was Tom Bracken. Frenzied Finance, Polydectes and Arrow Lad. Once in line for home Merry Mint, joined the leaders and in a slashing finish Arrow Lad prevailed by a nose from Merry Mint, who was only a head in front of Tom Bracken and Ti Tree in line, and then came Mandy, Frenzied Finance, Marsurd, Cosmetic and Oscillation. Ti Tree failed to jump out well and this cost her the race. Tom Bracken is a youngster worth watching for the future. a Indian Sage was a firm favourite for the Pearce Handicap, some £7OO ahead of Diogenes, who was very evenly backed with Hipo, Piuthair and Avola. Alyson showed out from the start closely followed by Piuthair, Avola, Diogenes, Hipo, and Mah Jong last. At the five furlong post Alyson was still leading from Piuthair, Avola, Modern, Hipo, Indian Sage and Diogenes. Crossing the top Avola and Piuthair were together from Modern, Piuthair and Alyson. Avola led into the straight from Piuthair, Modem and Hipo. Avola came on and looked the • winner until Piuthair showed up on the rails and took the race by a long neck. Modern being a length away third, with Hipo a similar distance behind, Indian Sage, Alyson and Diogenes were the next to finish. Te Monanui was a hot favourite for the Champion Plate, The Hawk being a good second favourite from Seatown and Grand Knight. Seatown got away badly. Phaola led Rouex out of the straight, followed by Hyanna and The Hawk all closely bunched. Down the back Hyanna went to the front from Rouex, followed by Phaola, Te Monanui, Grand Knight and Beacon Light. At the five furlongs Hyanna took charge from Rouex, Phaola and Seatown. At. the halfmile Hyanna and Seatown were together in front of Rouex and Phaola. Hyanna and Seatown led into the straight from Phaola and Rouex with Beacon Light, coming up fast on the outside. Once in line for the judge Seatown shot to the front, but Beacon Light came along with a well sustained run and won going away by a length from Seatown, who was only a head in front of Te Monanui, Hynanna was four lengths back, and then came Phaola, Rouex, The Hawk and Grand Knight. Le Choucas was a firm favourite for the sprint, nearly £7OO ahead of Merry Jest, then came Mireusonta, Shirley and Licinius very evenly backed. Merry Jest, Shirley and Black Cat showed out at the start, but Merry Jest soon fell back, and running on to the course proper Shirley led from Mireusonta, Black Cat and Royal Damon. The last-named came at Shirley very strongly over the last bit and they drew out from the field, Shirley prevailing by a short head, Merry Jest came on again and took third money four lengths off from Inferno, with Centrepiece, Nadrino, Epistle and Gold Box next. The first and second horses paid exactly the same dividend. Ballymoy 11. was a hot favourite for the concluding- event, more than twice as well backed as Black Mint and Lucky Days, solid support also going to Gourmet and Imitation. The Bolter, Note, Volplane and Ballymoy 11. were early prominent. Note led on to the course proper from The Bolter, Volplane and Ballymoy 11. Once in line for home Note was challenged by Black Mint, Volplane and Gourmet. Black Mint came on to win by a length from Goufmet, who was ope and a half lengths ahead of Volplane. Note was fourth and then came Lucky Days, Lady Ideal, Ballymoy 11. and Imitation. The weight stopped the favourite.
