VAST ENCYCLOPAEDIA

CHINA’S PRESENT TO LEAGUE. WILL COST SEVERAL MILLION DOLLARS. SPECIAL BUILDING REQUIRED TO HOUSE IT. Geneva, September 26. When Chu unexpectedly and without notice launched his attack on the British policy in China he was in the middle of a simple announcement that China intended to present to the League a copy of the Chinese Encyclopaedia. Chinese at present at Geneva, when interviewed, admitted that the Encyclopaedia, which has been in process of preparation for two centuries, is at present unprinted. It would cost several million dollars to print, probably entailing the raising of a foreign loan. Several hundred thousand dollars would be required to transport it to Geneva, and the League would have to provide a special building to hold it. The Chinese concluded: “It would be easier to transport a pyramid from Egypt to Geneva than the Chinese Encyclopaedia.”—A. & N.Z.
