THE YORKSHIRE MATCH. PLAY .ABANDONED FOR DAY. London, June 16. Collins and Lupton made another inspection at 2.15. After long consultation they decided to reinspect at 4 o’clock. The morning’s sun raised false hopes, but it disappeared after ten minutes. The absence of sun and wind made recovery a long process. Another long discussion accompanied the third inspection of the wicket, at 4 o’clock. As a result it was decided to abandon the idea of play to-day.—Reuter. VISITORS WIN TOSS. (Rec. 8.35 p.m.) London, June 17. Rain early in the morning after a fine night delayed the start of the match Australia v. Yorkshire, but a warm sun had a beneficial effect and it was decided to inspect the pitch at 12.30. Then a close inspection of the effects of the roller on the wicket led to a decision to start at one. Collins won the toss and decided to bat. Mailey, Ellis, Gregory, Ponsford and Hendry were omitted from the Australian team.—Reuter. CRITICISM OF SELECTORS. “NO SHARP PRACTICE.* London, June 16. Faulkner, writing in the Westminster Gazette, advocates allotting six days for tests. He says that Mr. Sydney Smith’s criticisms of the English selectors should not be taken too seriously. There was no suspicion of any sharp practice in withholding certain players, “which,” writes Faulkner, “was due to the exhibition of more foresight and horse sense than has previously been shown. After all, if ever cricketers thought and schemed and experimented, it is the Australians.”—Sun Cable. COUNTY' MATCHES. ,xvec. 8.45 p.m.) London, June 16.
