DISTRICT NEWS

FAREWELL AT WAIKAIA. (From Our Correspondent.) On Friday evening last a large crowd turned out in the Masonic Hotel to bid farewell to the local railway staff, who are being transferred from the district owing to the alteration in the service on the Switzers Branch. The early part of the evening was devoted to progressive euchre and on the call of time the winners turned up in Mrs. J. Hansen and Mr. T. Chamberlain, the bobby prizes being awarded to Mrs. S. Bishop and Mr W. Spence. A bountiful supper was then handed round and was much appreciated by all. Mr. J. Hansen, as chairman, in a few well-chosen remarks, asked the guests of the evening, Messrs W. Couchman, S. Donaldson, and T. Berry, to accept small presents as tokens of the esteem in which they were held, and of good-will which existed between them and their friends. He also stated that he was voicing the opinions of all present when he wished them health and happiness in their new homes. Other speakers were: Messrs Andrew Christie, A. J. Cameron, H. Northcote and L. McCaw. After the guests had briefly replied, dancing was indulged in to music supplied by Mr. H. De Laurie, Messrs W. Moffit and E. J. Hamer acting as M.C. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT AT FRESHFORD. On Thursday evening last a good crowd turned out to take part in a Euchre tournament in Mr Dickson’s barn at Freshford. At the conclusion of the play it was found that Mrs. Dickson had obtained 29 points, having won 14 games and drawn one, while Mr. W. Matheson with 12 wins and one draw had secured 25 points. Mr. Samson, as chairman, then presented the winners with the prizes. The consolation prizes went to Mrs. J. Hurley and Mr C. Lawrence. A very enjoyable supper was then handed round and was much appreciated. During the evening a guessing competition was carried out for a cake, and was won by Mrs W. Hickey, who guessed the correct weight. After supper the floor was cleared for dancing, Mr. E. D. Sanson supplying the music. SOCIAL AT McNAB. A very peasant evening was spent at McNab on Friday, when a large gathering responded to the invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Mair to do honour to Mr. and Ms. Thomas and family, who ae about to leave the district, making their destination Switzers. Mr Thomas has been appointed to take charge of the Ford rail car to run between Switzers and Riversdale. Mrs Mair threw her residence open to all, several games, cards, etc., being indulged in during the evening. After all had partaken of a handsome repast several of those present spoke as to the good qualities of the departing guests. Mr. Thomas, on behalf of himself, wife and family, thanked one and all for the many kindnesses all had shown to them during their sojourn at McNab, and extended an invitation to all to call upon them. During the evening several pipe selections were rendered by Pipers C. Hastie and B. Parker, and these were appreciated by all. Mr. Ferguson, on behalf of those assembled, moved a very hearty vote of thanks to the host and hostess for their hospitality. Before dispersing all hands joined in ringing ‘Tor They are Jolly Good Fellows,” and a verse of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a very successful evening to a close.
