The Department also stated its approval of the usual grant of £l2l 18s Id under Section 100 of the Act. The Education Department wrote asking for a list of the board’s insurances, the amounts and the premiums paid.—To be supplied. The Rector reported that the school roll that day was 128 boys and 115 girls; total 243. He drew attention in his report to the fact that in easterly weather the chimneys from the stoves in the classrooms on the east side of the school smoked badly. He also urged that a better heating system than open fireplaces in other parts of the school should be provided. He urged that some heating system should be considered by the board. Another matter referred to was the need for a couple of typewriters. A gramanhone, which could be provided by the department at a reasonable price, with records giving correct pronunciation in French would be invaluable for the teaching of that language. He recommended that the board consider the matter. He also recommended the establishment of drawing classes at the evening technical classes. He thought that about 20 pupils would join the class. A small fee would have to be charged. There were 26 boarders in the hostel at present, and he expected a few more very shortly. The report was adopted, and the matter of typewriters, drawing classes, and gramaphone were referred to the Finance Committee with power to act, and the heating recommendations were referred to the Works Committe for report. The chairman reported that a fire had broken out in one of the sheds, which was effectively stopped by the Fire Brigade. It was resolved thta the board’s thanks be expressed to the brigade for its excellent work. The matter of a large lawn mower was referred to the Works Committee to confer with other sports bodies regarding the joint purchase of a machine. Several other matters of detail were referred to various committees to attend to.
