A WHITE AUSTRALIA
LORD STRADBROKE’S INVESTIGATIONS. THE UNDESIRABLE FOREIGN ELEMENT. AMERICA’S EXPERIENCE. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, June 15. Lord Stradbroke, late Governor of Victoria, has arrived from Canada, via New York. Interviewed, Lord Stradbroke said his American experiences profoundly impressed him with the importance of a White Australia, the ideal meaning thereby not only the exclusion of the coloured races, but also undesirable foreigners. America had belatedly discovered that foreigners were swamping real Americans and thereby converting America into a dumping ground for the off-scourings of Europe and the world’s most criminal centres. Even the quota system was proving inadequate as a safeguard. Lord Stradbroke said he visited the Colotex factory in New Orleans which was daily transforming thousands of tons of valueless sugar-cane waste into valuable building boards. He saw five-year-old houses that had withstood all weathers and were apparently as good as the day they were built. This was a splendid object lesson for the sugar-growing districts of Queensland and New South Wales. Lord Stradbroke said he had also obtained details of the successful trials of the exterminator of boll weevil in cotton which he was forwarding to Mr Bruce.—A. & N.Z.
