BUILDING TRADE
MARKED ACTIVITY. BIG CHANGES IN WELLINGTON. (Special to the Times.) Wellington, June 13. At no time in the history of Wellington has there been such activity in the building industry in the city both in respect of the aggregate value of contracts and the number of large buildings in course of erection as there is at the present time. The city has now arrived at a stage in its progress when many of the early structures are having to be demolished to make way for larger and more permanent buildings which will bring in a greater return for the valuable land on which they stand and several old blocks in the heart of the city are rapidly changing in appearance. As the old gives place to the new the inevitable extension of business and commerce to the thoroughfares which formerly were occupied by residences has been witnessed in late years on the Terrace and more especially Kent Terrace and Cambridge Terrace where sections are continually changing hands and being used for the erection of large buildings. Latterly there have been indications that sites in Upper Wiffis street are in high favour for the same purpose. The shop area is gradually extending southwards from the Manners street corner and at least two large commercial buildings are now in course of erection further up Willis street.
