BOLD TALK
NEXT LABOUR GOVERNMENT. STAND FOR SOCIALISM. London, Apr. 5. Mr Jowett, the ex-Minister and President of the Independent Labour Party Conference, declared that the right to live was a fundamental demand which Labour must keep in the forefront and boldly announce that the next Labour Government, with or without a majority in the Commons, is determined to take decisive action in the direction of Socialism. During the past five years British workers’ wages have been reduced by the colossal total of £590,000,000. An increase in workers’ incomes of 5/weekly per child out of State revenue would increase the workers’ spending powers sufficiently to remove all unemployment. He agreed with the American Ambassador, Mr Houghton, that European statesmen had learnt nothing by the War. We were back to pre-war rivalries. The present capitalist policies must inevitably drown Europe in a sea of blood unless international Labour organised resistance. The party stood for Internationalism as well as Socialism in their time..—A. & N.Z.
