DUNEDIN EXHIBITION
SCHOOL CHILDREN’S OPPORTUNITIES. ANNOUNCEMENT BY DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION. At yesterday’s monthly meeting of the Southland Education Board the following announcement in connection with the attendance of school children at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition was received from the Director of Education (Mr J. Caughley), Wellington, and read:— “I have to inform you that in the case of remote schools of Otago and all schools in other districts the Department is prepared to regard as school attendance the time spent by pupils of Standard 111. to Standard VII.. or by pupils of over 10 years of age visiting the Dunedin Exhibition during February and March, provided such visit is paid under the guidance of a teacher and is made of real educational value. .-“In each case, the approval of the board must be secured and arrangements must be made with Mr C. Strack, manager, Education Court, before the excursion is undertaken. It is understood that parties from distant parts of the country may be billeted in private houses during February and March. The exhibition authorities expect that as far as possible pupils from larger schools will visit the Exhibition during the school holidays, when they may, if travelling from a distance, be accommodated in certain of the Dunedin city schools. “No school should be closed if only a few pupils desire to visit the Exhibition. In such a case the pupils from several schools could combine and proceed to Dunedin under the care of one of the teachers.” “The Department understands that the Exhibition authorities have made arrangements with the Railway Department and the Union Steam Ship Company to carry school children at reduced rates and will 'arrange the dates at which pupils from different districts are to be allowed to travel”
