GALLANT RESCUE

CREW OF ITALIAN STEAMER SAVED. VESSEL LEET SINKING. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK, October 21. The Italian freighter Ignazio Florio was abandoned sinking when 27 of the crew were removed after an amazing rescue by the steamer, President Harding. The later stood by all night, unable to assist because of the high seas and a hurricane of wind. These moderated sufficiently in the morning, however, to allow lifeboats to approach the derelict, oil being used to smooth the seas. All the Ignazio Florio’s lifeboats were smashed and the rudder was torn away.
