MOTORING MATTERS
SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Executive Committee of the Southland Motor Association was attended by the Chairman (Dr S. Brown), Messrs A. E. Lee, T. F. Macdonald, G. R. Cooper, W. F. Sutton, E. A. Nichol, D. J. Wesney and Dr G. Crawford. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from Mr G. P. Chewing, Mossburn, expressing the opinion that the time and money spent on improving the Lake Te Anau road between the Keys and Hillside would be more or less wasted if a certain amount was not immediately spent in grading the sides and filling the ruts which the motors had made in the soft gravel. The road was now in splendid order and he suggested that the Association should endeavour to see that the work was not neglected.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the Wallace County Council.
Mr W. A. Stout wrote complaining of the kind of maintenance that had recently been put on the main road from Tokonui to Waikawa. For a distance of approximately three miles in the neighbourhood of Quarry Hills the road had been lavishly covered with large sharp-pointed stones. He saw stones on the road as big as his head. Maintenance in this way was disastrous to motor cars and was also hard on stock.—lt was decided to request the Southland County Council to bind the road. A letter was received from the Otago Motor Club expressing appreciation of the many kindnesses extended to the representative of the Club at the quarterly meeting of the South Island Motor Union, recently held, in Invercargill.—Received.
A letter was received from A. Sleeman, Mataura, drawing the Association’s attention to the decision of the Gore Borough to issue driving licenses to applicants who had been driving a car for three months.—Members stated that this was also being done in other townships and expressed the opinion that it was defeating the object of the regulations. It was decided to refer the matter to the South Island Motor Union. OTHER MATTERS. Four new members were elected. The secretary reporting on the financial position of the Association stated that its balance at the bank amounted to £204 4s 4d. It had a total membership of 474, but of thd.se 81 were unfinancial. Some of these had never paid a subscription since they joined two or three years ago, but a number of the subscriptions would come in before the end of the financial year. It was decided to refer the matter of collecting outstanding subscriptions to the Chairman and secretary. It was decided to recommend to the incoming Committee that it take into consideration the question of employing a canvasser to canvass for members to the local Association.
The sum of £2O was foted to the Southland League for the use of its Board Room.
It was decided to draw the attention of the Invercargill Borough Council to the dangerous state of the road at the railway crossing at Ocean Beach and also to the danger arising from the raised footpath at the intersection of Dee and Spey streets and in the vicinity of the railway station.
