DUNEDIN EXHIBITION

SOUTHLAND REPRESENTATION. COUNTY COUNCIL’S CONTRIBUTION. The proposal that the local bodies of Southland should contribute towards the cost of providing a Southland Court at the Dunedin Exhibition was placed before the members of the Southland County Council at the monthly meeting held yesterday afternoon, by Mr J. E. Winsloe, who is organising the Court on behalf of the Southland League. Mr Winsloe briefly explained that it was aimed to secure a sum of from £llOO to £l5OO from the local bodies of the province, the remainder of the amount required to carry on the Court till the conclusion of the Exhibition being obtained from the sale of space. He outlined the advantages which such a Court would give to the province, especially from a publicity point of view, and asked the Council to give the matter very careful consideration prior to March 27, when a meeting would be held in Invercargill. Mr Winsloe also outlined the proposed method of contribution, and suggested that the County should base its contribution on 10 per cent of the total rates collected. That would mean a contribution of from £5OO to £560 from the County. No doubt it would be said that that amount was considered large for one body to allocate, but he wished to remind the meeting that many of the modern local bodies were contributing more in proportion than th® County would on the basis suggested.

The Chairman informed Mr Winsloe that the matter would receive careful consideration and subsequently it was decided, on the motion of Councillor Robertson, seconded by Councillor Wraytt, that the Council was prepared to allocate the sum of £250 for the purposes indicated, the consensus of opinion being that under the circumstances it was a fairly liberal contribution to make. The Council also deputed Councillor L. Neiderer to attend the proposed meeting of local body representatives in the interest® of the County.
