WYNDHAM

THE CHORAL SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING (From, our Correspondent). Hit! first annual meeting of the Wyndham Choral Society was held on Tuesday evening, Mr E. G. Macpherson (President) presiding over a good attendance. The secretary (Mr EL F. Hicks) tabled a report and balance-sheet of the year’s work. The balance-sheet presented showed receipts amounting to £35 14/3 and expenditure £25 8/-, leaving a credit balance of £lO 6/3. Their assets amounted to £l6 6/3. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report was as follows: “It is with much pleasure that your Committee are enabled to report a successful season, and also present to you a financial statement for the year ending on February 28 showing a credit balance, and which we think you will all agree is most favourable.

“Practices commenced early in July, and for the 21 practices held the average attendance was 34.62 out of a membership of 48 financial members and four non-finan-cial who had attended only one practice each. The highest attendance was 45 and the lowest 28, which was caused by the height of the milking season making it awkward for some of our members to attend.

“A concert was held on November 4, and in spite of a wet and stormy night, there was a good attendance, as the door receipts will show.

“A concert of carol singing was held on a Sunday evening in December, when there was a fairly large audience, who showed their appreciation in the collection receipts, which were sufficient to clear all expenses incurred.

“In reference to the balance-sheet, there is a credit of £lO 6/3 cash in hand, being an increase of £5 17/3 on the amount of funds at the start, viz., £4 9/-, received from the late Choral Union. This tends to show that with a choir interested in the work and working harmoniously with their conductor and among themselves a very successful Society can be maintained, both from a musical and financial standpoint. “The Society is greatly indebted for its success to the untiring efforts of their conductor, Mr L. B. Borrow, who has presided as conductor throughout, and without doubt he has the welfare of the Society very much at heart.

Thanks are also due to the tLibrarian, Mr John Black, for sorting out and keeping the Society’s music in order; also to the visitors who had so kindly assisted at the concert, and to Mr W. H. Nutsford for his assistance in preparing for and clearing up after the concert and for his attention during its progress. “One of the most, important positions was very ably filled by Mrs Borrow, who had kindly officiated as accompaniste throughout the season.” THE -DISCUSSION. In formally moving the adoption of the documents, the President said that he considered the result attained during the first year of the Society was very satisfactory. He was pleased with the way the local and surrounding country people had come forward and assisted them. He himself had derived great pleasure in his connections with the work of the Society. Major Rice, in a few remarks, commended in high terms the work of the secretary (Mr Hicks). He considered the Office of secretary next in importance to that of the conductor, and as the secretary always had a lot of hard work to do, any Society without a good man in the position was considerably handicapped. He thought that the result of the year’s work as disclosed by the balance-sheet was most satisfactory, seeing that the Society had been in existence for less than a j r ear. Mr D. N. A. Macpherson endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks. He hoped to see an increase in the honorary memberships during the incoming year, as thy were an advantage, both to the Society anu to the holders because of the benefits attached to them. The adoption of the report and balancesheet was seconded by Mr Joseph Allan and carried. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year:— President: Mr E. G. Macpherson. Vice-Presidents: Messrs Jos. Allan and S. Rice. Hon. Conductor: Mr L. B. Borrow. Hon. Accompaniste: Miss L. A. Marsh. Committee: Messrs D. N. A. Macpherson, John Black and H. F. Hicks; Mesdames H. J. Murphy and P. B. Courtis. Hon. Librarian: Mr John Black. Hon. Secretary and Treasurer: Mr H. F. Hicks. OTHER BUSINESS. The President, in moving a vote of thanks to the Conductor (Mr Borrow), said that Mr Borrow had taken great interest in the work, and had gone to endless trouble to ensure the success of the Society. He (Mr Macpherson) had considered it a pleasure to be conducted by such a capable enthusiast. He would also like to include in his motion a vote of thanks to the Librarian (Mr Black), the secretary (Mr Hicks) and to the. accompaniste (Mrs Borrow). Seconded by Mr Rice and carried. In reply, Mr Borrow said that it had given him great pleasure to conduct the Society. It was very gratifying to notice* the discipline displayed by the members, and their endeavour to carry out his instructions from time to time. He trusted that the incoming year would be equally as successful. A hearty vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
