GERMAN GOVERNMENT
CHANCELLOR’S SPEECH CRITICISED. SAVOURS OF NATIONALIST INTIMIDATIONS. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, January 20. The Times is not satisfied with Dr Luther’s speech, and says: “It savours too much of Nationalist intimidation, and may well arouse doubt and suspicions. We are told that the Reichstag received it respectfully, but without cheets. It will be received in a like temper by this country and Europe.- ’ The debate in the Reichstag on the Government’s policy has clarified the attitude of the various parties to the Cabinet. The Central Party promised to support Dr. Luther only so long as he treads the path tp which the Centre Party has agreed, but if be deviates therefrom the necessary action will be taken. The Socialists have lodged a motion of no-confidence, but the German Nationals, Popularise, Bavarian, People’s and Economic Parties jointly moved a motion approving of Dr. Luther’s declaration. Thus for the moment the Government is toleratably secure. SPEECH BY SOCIALIST. CREATES UPROAR IN REICHSTAG. BERLIN, January 20. (Received January 21, 7.5 p.m.). An uproar, in which members of the Right shouted “traitor” and “are you paid by France,” greeted the Socialist, Herr Breitscheid, who stated in the course of a debate in the Reichstag on the Government’s policy, that it appeared the complaints of the Allied Military Control Commissions. could not be completely refuted; also that students participated in military training for the Reichswehr.
Further noisy interruptions punctuated the remainder of the speech, culminating in a shout, “thank God I” when Herr Breitscheid declared that the new Government was a stage on the way to the restoration of the Monarchy.
