SOUTHLAND COAL FOR SOUTHLAND RAILWAYS.
To the Editor. Sir, —I believe Mr William Handyside is pretty right when he supposes that the season Southland coal is not burnt in our locomotives is that it means too much shovelling for the firemen. I believe, in any case, there is no reason why when engines are designed they should not be provided with fire-boxes and tenders for this coal; but I doubt if any attempt has been made in the past to do this. The engines are probably ordered in a given quantity all on one design—probably following on British lines, which engines, of course, are all built to burn hard coal. Anyway I think this is a matter which our Chamber of Commerce should take up with the Minister of Railways and the new Commissioners at the present juncture, and so ascertain if there be any definite reason for this seeming injustice to Southland. « I am, etc., W. H. P. FLEMING.
