THE WAR MEMORIAL
To the Editor. Sir, —I was disappointed in your attitude to the decision of the Memorial Committee and fail to see where the impossibility comes in. All we would need would be the names of those who died overseas, as those who died here have at least, a grave in New Zealand. Surely from Base Records we could get, if not a list of Southland’s dead, at least a list of all those who enlisted from Southland and a list of New Zealand’s overseas’ dead. From these two lists it should not be hard to get all the name* required for the Memorial. If the Memorial Committee is too apathetic, we may be able to find a few soldiers pleased to face the impossible (?) task. On tiie tablet, following the names of the overseas dead, could be an inscription memory of those who died of wounds in New Zealand. I would like to see more civilians voice an opinion before it is too late. I am, etc., DIGGER. [Our correspondent’s easy method obviously would not make a complete list of Southlandera who died in the war and found graves overseas. —Ed. S.T.]
