THE TOWN’S BUSH RESERVE.

To the Editor. Sir,—Some little time ago I noticed in your columns an announcement to the effect that the Corporation had acquired from Thomson’s Trust the area of bush to the west of the present scenic reserve. I think that the Chairman of the Reserves Committee, the members of the Committee, and the Councillors are to be congratulated for the forethought and enterprise displayed in this matter. In the near future it will be the best recreation reserve possessed by the town, and will proride recreation for both old and young.' As a native of New Zealand and a lover of wild nature. I hope this piece of bush will be preserved intact, except, perhaps, for the introduction of native plants not found there now. It would be a crying shame to spoil the character of the bush by introducing exotic trees. There will be room for these on the outskirts of the bush. Another matter which requires attention is adequate ranging. Vandals who tear down branches of Kowhai and clematis vines should be made to understand that they cannot do this with impunity. Kakas and pigeons are now to be seen in small numbers within a mile or so of the town, and tuis and bell-birds are to be seen in the town itself. There is, therefore, every hope that our native avifauna may come back to Thomson’s Bush if they are adequately protected. Looking at the thing from a financial standpoint, it would seem that the town has got a bargain, as the timber on the land should be worth more than the purchase price, though this timber should never be cut. In conclusion, I trust, Mr Editor, that others will voice their appreciation of this purchase through your columns.—l am, etc., NAT.
