THE WAR MEMORIAL.
To the Editor. Sir, —I read with great admiration your leading article in the issue of November 5. and concur in every word of it. But will you allow me to point out that Mr Kipling did not “devise that unforgettable line, ‘Their name hveth for evermore.’ ” I thought the words seemed familiar to me apart from Mr Kipling. They are to be found in the 44th chapter of the Book of Ecciesiasticus (Apochryphal) in the Bible. The 14th verse of that chapter reads as follows:—“Their bodies are buried in peace; but their name liveth for evermore.”—l am. etc., G. FYNES-CLINTON. All Saints’, Gladstone, November 5. To the Editor, Sir, —I am surprised at the action of the Memorial Committee in deciding to omit all names from the memorial tablets. What are the tablets for, if not for the names of the fallen? With many others I subscribed to the Southlatd Memorial when the collectors promised tha 1 the names of all the fallen “would be inscribed on the Memorial, whether the district to which they belonged contributed or not.”
I have no documentary evidence of this, but the promise was made over and over again by members of the Collection Committee. and a great point was made of the expense of the inscriptions when appealing for funds. Country districts have their monuments, and also memorials in the churches and schools to which they all contributed, and the difficulties of the names have already been overcome in the country districts. Therefore, with all the lists prepared, there should be no difficulty in preparing a complete list.—l am, etc., COUNTRY SUBSCRIBER. (A complete list for Southland is much more difficult to achieve than our correspondent thinks. In our opinion a really complete list is an impossibility.—Ed., S.T.)
