OFF TO NEW ZEALAND
SOLDIER’S WIFE ELOPES. SEQUEL IN DIVORCE COURT. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) LONDON, November 4. 1 pathetic story was unfolded in the Divorce Court. Harold Berry, civil servant, was awarded £BOO damages against a man named Wakelin, now living in New Zealand with Mrs Berry. Wakelin came to England with the New Zealand forces, and was billeted upon Mrs Berry, whose husband was in France. A year after the Armistice Mrs Berry suddenly vanished from home. Petitioner traced her to Tilbury, and discovered that Wakelin had paid her fare to New Zealand. He overtook his wife at Toulon, but failed to persuade her to return. Still insistent, he followed her up to New Zealand, where he saw Wakelin, and found he had a great affection for his wife. The latter wrote to petitioner: *T have gone too far seeing you, and the pity of it nearly drives me to distraction. You will never know how highly I think of you for your sacrifice.”
Mr Justice Duke granted petitioner the custody of the boy, 7| years, and girl of 4 years, who are now in New Zealand with Mrs Berry.
