TOLL GATES

v FIRST TO BE ABOLISHED. POSITION TO BE FURTHER DISCUSSED. (Special to the Times.) WELLINGTON, November 4. The first toll gate to be abolished is the Waipuku toll gate, which will give a clear road from Wellington to New Plymouth, and Auckland. When the Main Highways were recently declared by Order-in-Council, certain roads or sections of roads were not included, as they involved toll gates, the abolition of which has been the subject of several conferences between members of the Main Highways Board and County Councils in Taranaki. A section of road in Taranaki is now declared a main highway on condition that the toll gate is abolished not later than March 31 next, when the financial provisions of the Act come into force. The section declared is within the Inglewood County, which was previously omitted on account of the existence of the Waipuku toll gate. The condition of the declaration is that the Stratford County Council abolish the toll gate. Four other toll gates in Taranaki will be the subject of a further conference between the Councils and the Main Highways Board.
